The Markham-Unionville Rotary Club held its first-ever Easter Food Drive earlier in April to benefit the Markham Food Bank.
Volunteers distributed 500 bags to collect donations in the Kennedy Road and 16th Avenue area and they picked up 192 filled bags, collecting 38 per cent of the intended target -- an encouraging sign.
The club appreciates the outstanding response from the community as the food drive also raised $500 in money donations to the Food Bank.
"We would like to thank the Markham community for their outpouring support for our first initiatives to help the needy in our midst," said the Rotary Club.
The food drive was held with the York Regional Police as a partner.
The food bank has seen a significant increase in the number of families using its services during the pandemic, which has been exacerbated by rising food prices.
