Emergency Preparedness Week is a national event supported by Public Safety Canada. This year, the theme is “Emergency Preparedness: Be Ready for Anything.”

To encourage residents to take action to become better prepared for various emergencies they could face, the City of Markham is offering a prize draw to win emergency prep kits.

Emergencies can happen anywhere, any time. A basic home emergency preparedness kit will help you to take care of yourself and your family for 72 hours (three days).

The city recommends putting important documents, such as passports and birth certificates; phone chargers; first aid kits and other essential items into the emergency kit.

It also encourages residents to have a “Grab and Go” emergency kit for each family member and keep these near the exit doors. This helps if you must evacuate your home quickly.

To enter the draw, simply comment or post a picture on social media (Facebook and Instagram) of what you would include in an emergency kit for your family, pet or car and use #MkmEmergencyPrep. All entries will be entered to win one of five emergency prep kits, valued at over $100.

In addition, all entries that include your pets will also be entered into a separate draw for a pet preparedness kit valued at $30.

The contest closes on May 9, and the draw will be held on May 23. More information is available on www.markham.ca.
