Newmarket opens municipal election nominations May 2

Newmarket’s prospective leaders can put themselves forward starting May 2 as the town is opening up election nominations.

The town announced the nomination period will begin Monday, lasting until Aug. 19. Citizens can put themselves forward for mayor, deputy mayor and regional councillor, one of seven councillor positions for each ward and four school board trustee positions for the four boards serving Newmarket.

“It can be a fulfilling experience to serve your community,” the town said on its election website. “A strong local government needs dedicated, well-informed, ethical leaders that are committed to their communities.”

The election runs for a 10-day period from Oct. 15 to Oct. 24. The town said it would post a running list of candidates on its election website, newmarketvotes.ca.

Those wishing to run -- except for trustee of a French-language school board -- must schedule an appointment with the town election office during the nomination period to file and submit required documents. You can arrange a meeting by contacting 905-953-5300 ext. 2210 or emailing elections@newmarket.ca.

This year’s election will be running virtually, with citizens receiving personal identification numbers to access an online ballot. However, the town will also be running a voter assistance centre during the period for those without internet access. It will also allow citizens to make appointments to vote in person by paper ballot at the town office.

Third-party advertisers registration is also opening May 2.

Trustee elections for the regional French public and catholic school boards are being administrated through the City of Vaughan. Anyone interested in running for these positions should contact elections@vaughan.ca or visit vaughan.ca/elections.
