Flags at Vaughan's city hall and all other municipal buildings are being lowered to half-mast to honour the memory of longtime city employee Martin Tavares, who died after a long journey with cancer.

"Today, the City of Vaughan mourns," Mayor Maurizio Bevilacqua tweeted on Saturday, April 16.

"Martin was a dedicated, committed and caring individual to his family, friends and the community."

Bevilacqua said Tavares was in public service for "all the right reasons" and a "true professional."

Tavares served most recently as the manager of parks and open space planning in the parks infrastructure planning and development department.

"He will be missed, but his legacy will live on," Bevilacqua said, adding his thoughts and prayers on behalf of the municipality to Tavares' family, friends and everyone whose life he touched.
