The Markham community is supporting the humanitarian effort for Ukraine with a donation of $25,000, Mayor Frank Scarpitti said in a statement.

Five thousand will be given to the Markham Rotary Club Foundation that is raising money for medical supplies destined for Ukraine.

"I wish to thank the Markham Sunrise Rotary Club who have once again fulfilled Rotary's motto Service Above Self," said Scarpitti. "Their tremendous campaign to raise money and make airline arrangements for medical supplies to be shipped over is truly inspiring."

The remainder will be donated to the Ukrainian Red Cross, one of the main agencies leading the humanitarian relief effort.

"We have all been horrified by the images of devastation, loss of life and been moved by the emotional upheaval the war has caused, particularly for families and young children," said the mayor.

According to the statement, each year, the community hosts Mayor Frank Scarpitti's Chinese New Year Dinner to raise money for worthy causes.

"Although we have been unable to hold the event during the past two years, it was very compelling to use proceeds from previous dinners to support the people of Ukraine," said Scarpitti.

The mayor said further support will be announced when Markham and York Region welcome Ukraine refugees.

"Our thoughts and prayers continue to go out to the people of Ukraine and to the Ukrainian-Canadian community," he said.
