Got unwanted electronics lying around your home?

Here’s a perfect way during Earth Week to get rid of them.

The Town of Newmarket is holding an electronics recycling event April 23 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the parking lot of the Operations Centre at 1275 Maple Hill Ct.

Rather than ending up in a landfill, electronics and household batteries will be properly recycled and disposed by the town’s contractor, Quantum Lifecycle Partners LP.

Items accepted at the drive-thru event include computers, printers, display devices, printer cartridges, video gaming devices, phone including cell phones, headphones, speakers, cameras including security cameras, video recorders, drones with audio or video recording equipment, handheld point-of-sale terminals or devices, musical instruments, audio recording equipment, parts of information technology, telecommunications and audio/visual equipment sold separately such as hard drives and peripherals and cables used to support the function of information technology, telecommunications and audio visual equipment, including charging equipment.

Items not accepted include motor vehicles, children’s toys, textiles, power tools, small and large appliances and information technology, telecommunications, audio-visual (ITT/AV) equipment weighing more than 250kg (551lbs).

“Properly disposing of your unwanted electronics will keep these items out of landfills, help to reuse and recycle valuable raw materials and most importantly, save energy, reduce pollution and minimize greenhouse gases,” Mayor John Taylor said.

The town is also recommending these five environmental actions:

Replace light bulbs with energy efficient ones, which consume up to 80 per cent less electricity.

Repair Cafe

Consider buying used items instead of new or repairing before replacing. On April 30, a Repair Cafe in collaboration with NewMakeIt and York Region returns to the Newmarket Public Library.

Reduce consumption of single-use items by switching to refillable or reusable containers.

Recycle your batteries at battery recycling bin locations at the town hall (395 Mulock Dr.), Magna Centre (800 Mulock Dr.) Ray Twinney Recreation Complex (100 Eagle St. W.) and the Newmarket Seniors' Meeting Place (474 Davis Dr.)

Prioritize walking, cycling or taking public transit instead of using your car.
