A new, modern parking structure at the Rutherford GO Station in Vaughan opened Friday.
Featuring 1,200 net new spaces and 100 new secure bike parking spots, the project is part of a $239-million initiative aimed at reducing traffic and supporting future two-way, all-day service along the Barrie GO line.
“This much-needed infrastructure has created more than 1,000 new parking spaces to service this critical link in one of Vaughan's busiest transit hubs,” Vaughan Mayor Maurizio Bevilacqua said Friday at the opening ceremony.
As one of Ontario’s fastest-growing municipalities, Vaughan is experiencing first-hand the positive benefits of having a subway in the heart of the downtown core, the Vaughan Metropolitan Centre (VMC) as well as other public transits, which continue to be catalysts for job creation, the mayor said.
The new parking structure at Rutherford is fully accessible and provides approximately 30 spaces reserved for accessible parking. It is also a gold level certification under the LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design).
“I am firmly committed to delivering better transit options, expanded parking and a better commuter experience for Vaughan families,” said Stephen Lecce, MPP for King-Vaughan.
The Rutherford Go station is among a total of seven GO stations that are identified by Vaughan including the proposed Kirby GO and Concord GO stations.
Vaughan’s population is projected to increase by 36 per cent by 2031 and jobs are expected to grow by 18 per cent in the same period.
