The public is invited to join York Regional Police in celebrating diversity at a free event with music, dances and community booths in Markham on Sunday.

York Regional Police is partnering with the community to host the commemoration of the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination to collectively reaffirm the community’s commitment to eradicating prejudice and discrimination.

Under the theme of 'Together We Are More,' this year’s event will feature community booths, diverse musical and artistic performances and guest speakers.

Artistic performances are expected from the Biindigen Healing and Arts Sacred Spirit Dancers, Northern Legs Southern Fists, the Irish Dance Studio, Nirkoda Israeli Dancers of Toronto and Niro Dance Creations.

In 1966, the United Nations declared March 21 as the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination. The declaration was intended to increase awareness around the issues of racism and discrimination.

Canada became one of the first countries to formally recognize the declaration when it proclaimed the day in 1989.

“York Regional Police is proud to be able to host this special cultural event in person once again,” said Chief Jim MacSween. “We are looking forward to connecting with members of our community during this celebration.”

The event will take place at the Crystal Fountain Event Venue in Markham, located at 60 McDowell Gate, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Admission is free and all is welcome.
