March 23 is designated as School Crossing Guard Appreciation Day, and regions across Ontario are taking the time to appreciate these dedicated individuals who help our children travel safely to and from school each day.

Several school boards are also urging students, parents and communities to do a special shout out to their favourite crossing guards.

The Town of Halton Hills offered residents the option of downloading thank you cards from its website. As did Oakville.

Niagara Police too expressed their “sincere appreciation” on Twitter.

The City of Vaughan also recognized and thanked “the dedicated team of 114 crossing guards”, while encouraging residents who want a flexible work schedule to consider joining them.

In addition to celebrating school crossing guards, Vaughan city officials issues important road safety reminders.

“Streets and sidewalks can be busy in the morning when people are heading to school and the afternoon when they leave. That’s why it’s important for children, parents and drivers to be alert, follow the road rules and walk safely -- especially in school zones. Take extra precautions around crosswalks, pedestrian crossovers, stopped school buses and intersections. Remember, road safety is everyone’s responsibility,” the City said in a statement.
