Coyote encounters -- a little too close for comfort -- have some residents rattled. There have been numerous sightings reported in local parks and streets. One turned into a fatal attack on an eight-pound Yorkie in Mintleaf Park last summer.
A virtual session with tips on how to coexist with the some of the city's more wild neighbours is being held March 23, from 7 to 10 p.m.
The three-hour session will provide details on the city's coyote response and offer measures to ensure a peaceful coexistence in communities.
Every year around April, coyotes start looking for more food to raise their pups. This means that there will be increased sightings near ravine systems, natural areas, parks, even backyards.
Markham’s licensing and animal services co-ordinator, Christy Lehman, told yorkregion.com that residents can take measures to ensure a peaceful coexistence with their wild neighbours.
Typically, foxes and coyotes are unlikely to initiate contact with people.
“When you encounter with them and they have no intention of hurting you, just leave them alone. Remember not to approach or feed them,” Lehman said.
The session will also include information on foxes, rats and other wildlife, as well as a new $615 immediate fine in effect for feeding wildlife.
