East Gwillimbury has launched a competition for a public art exhibit to be located at Children of Peace Park in Sharon. Artists’ proposals will be scored and should be an artwork that celebrates the history of the Children of Peace or Sharon Temple, which is next to the park.

Artists should consider permanence of media. The use of bronze, granite or other durable materials is recommended.

Viewers of the sculptures need to consider an “in-the-round” composition to facilitate viewing from all angles.

Artists will be selected and recommended to East Gwillimbury Council by the Arts and Culture Advisory Committee of Council which is comprised of art professionals, representatives from the community, and town staff. Their role is to provide key input including developing the theme and vision for the project.

Respondents will be required to confirm all technical requirements with respect to their proposed artwork.

The successful artist will be awarded up to $90,000.00 (excluding HST and 10 per cent for maintenance) for the fabrication and installation of their work. The following is an example of a possible, agreed-upon payment schedule with the successful artists:

Forty per cent upon the successful artist’s submission of maquette and related drawings, studies or reports as required by and the satisfaction of the arts and culture advisory council committee. Thirty per cent upon 40 per cent completion of fabrication and 30 per cent upon completion of installation.

The submission deadline is March 31. For more information visit eastgwillimbury.ca.
