Maple Pioneer Seniors Club in Vaughan will be collecting donations to the Red Cross Ukraine Humanitarian Crisis on March 8, Coun. Marilyn Iafrate said in her Thursday, March 3 newsletter and in a tweet.

The club will be collecting donations from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Merino Community Centre located at 8 Merino Rd. in Maple.

Iafrate said cheques should be made payable to: Canadian Red Cross Ukraine Humanitarian Crisis.

On Feb. 24, Vaughan raised the Ukrainian flag and illuminated its city hall with that nation’s colours following the Russian invasion. Mayor Maurizio Bevilacqua has also expressed the city’s solidarity with the people of Ukraine against what he described "reckless and dangerous acts of war and violence."

Meanwhile, the United Nations said Thursday that more than four million refugees may end up fleeing Ukraine due to the ongoing invasion.

One million people have already fled since Russia began invading last week, the UN added.
