York Region makes top 5 on Forbes list of Canada's best employers for 2nd year in a row

City of Markham also recognized for 2022

For a second year in a row, York Region has ranked in the top five on the Forbes list of Canada's best employers for 2022.

York Region is the highest-ranking government employer in Canada and fourth overall among 300 organizations.

The City of Markham was also recognized, in 15th place overall.

The prestigious award is presented by Forbes and Statista Inc. The lost was selected by surveying a vast sample of more than 10,000 Canadian employees working for companies with more than 500 employees in Canada.

"The Regional Municipality of York is proud to be named one of Canada’s best employers and the top employer in the government services sector," said York Region chair and CEO Wayne Emmerson.

"The past two years have been challenging times for many of us. However, our regional staff have demonstrated resiliency and perseverance by continuing to provide important programs and services our residents and communities rely on," Emmerson said.

According to a Jan. 26 media release from York Region, the benefits of working at the region include:

Adding additional support to employee health and well-being during the COVID-19 pandemic;

Providing virtual and flexible telework opportunities, where available;

Providing opportunities for employees to grow and develop new skills, including engaging with the next generation of employees and supporting a culture of continuous learning; and

Engaging with partners in the administration of programs and initiatives centred around diversity and inclusion, including the Inclusion Charter of York Region.

"This latest recognition as a national top employer is an affirmation to the dedication of our talented and committed team of approximately 5,000 staff," said York Region Chief Administrative Officer Bruce Macgregor. "We work hard to build and maintain strong, caring, safe communities through our mission statement -- working together to serve our thriving communities -- today and tomorrow. We do this by relying on our corporate values of integrity, commitment, accountability, respect and excellence."

York Region joins several other local businesses and organizations who were also recognized as some of Canada’s best employers for 2022. According to the region, this reinforces York Region as a destination of choice for attracting a strong and highly educated workforce that helps drive business growth and economic vitality.
