The Toronto District School Board will provide students with one Level 3 medical-grade mask per day until the end of the school year.
Students are still permitted to wear their own masks.
The total cost to the board will be from $444,000 to $2 million, depending on how many students use the program.
The board is using reserve funds for the program, which is not funded by the Ministry of Education.
The masks are currently being ordered.
“Medical masks can be cost-prohibitive for many families. By providing medical masks, the TDSB is ensuring that all students have access to high-quality PPE and greater protection against COVID-19,” said Alexander Brown, chairman of the board.
“We continue to urge the Ministry of Education to fully fund and reimburse school boards for all pandemic costs, including providing medical masks for students,” Brown added.
Other COVID-19 health measures used in schools include daily health screening, regular hand hygiene, physical distancing, and the use of HEPA filters in all classrooms.
