Town of East Gwillimbury announces 0% increase for water rates in 2022

Even though water rates aren’t increasing, average monthly cost of water in East Gwillimbury ranks 2nd highest in York Region

The Town of East Gwillimbury council passed its 2022 water and wastewater budget and your rates aren’t going up.

Council approved a budget with no change to the town’s water rate in January. The current fixed rate for water is $23 per month and a variable rate of $2.28/m3. The fixed rate for wastewater is also $23 month with a variable rate of $2.19/m3.

Even though the water rates aren’t increasing, the average monthly cost of water in East Gwillimbury is the second highest in York Region at just under $140 per month.  Markham has the cheapest water, according to a town staff report, at just under $100 per month. 

Servicing is more expensive in East Gwillimbury because there is a large amount of land to service and a relatively small population, town staff said.

The town has also added electronic billing as an option for receiving your water bill.

“This is good stuff," Ward 2 Coun. Joe Persechini said. "We are keeping the rates down."
