During the city’s council meeting on Tuesday, January 25, 2022, Vaughan’s Mayor Maurizio Bevilacqua announced that the City of Vaughan had been awarded Platinum ISO 37120 certification for 2019 from the World Council on City Data (WCCD). The WCCD was founded in Canada in 2014 and helps cities by giving them access to verified ISO standardized city data that is globally comparable to make data-driven decisions. With this data, WCCD aims to help make Canadian cities more environmentally friendly and safer to live in.
This is the fifth year in a row that Vaughan has received the highest level of certification the WCCD can give to a city. The city was rewarded with this certification after Vaughan reported 90 key performance indicators (KPIs) used to measure performance on City services and quality of life. In addition, Mayor Bevilacqua announced that the City of Vaughan is embracing the ISO-37122 -- Indicators for Smart Cities. “Once completed, Vaughan will be among the first cities in the world to be certified under this new Smart City standard,” he said.
In 2015, the City of Vaughan officially became a World Council on City Data Certified City. In order to build a sustainable, inclusive, and prosperous city in 2018, the mayor created a Smart City Advisory Task Force to improve how data is collected. “I am pleased to chair this task force that is working hard to increase economic competitiveness, advance data initiatives, foster innovation and improve engagement with stakeholders, community groups and citizens,” said Mayor Bevilacqua.
The city is constantly looking for ways to incorporate Smart City solutions. “From improving infrastructure and roads to delivering recreation services and world-class health care, I believe that taking a Smart City approach is fundamental to achieving efficient, reliable and innovative city-building,” said Bevilacqua. “Collectively, we are making a positive difference in the lives of our residents, and, together, we will continue to unleash our city’s full potential and build upon Vaughan’s position as a global Smart City leader.”
