Aurora's Black History Month events include flag raising, online opening celebration

A number of events to mark Black History Month are being held in Aurora throughout February.

On Feb. 1, a flag-raising ceremony, hosted by the town and the Aurora Black Community Association, will be held at the town hall and also virtually at 4:30 p.m.

On Feb. 2 from noon to 12:45 p.m., find out about Dancin' Feet: Harlem and basketball in the 1920s and ’30s, a virtual event hosted by the Aurora Public Library in collaboration with York University’s The Scholar’s Hub.

On Feb. 3, the library is hosting the virtual An Evening with George Elliott Clarke, who was appointed to the Order of Canada in 2008. “Where Beauty Survived” is a memoir that explores his turbulent relationship with his father.

On Feb. 5, an online Black History Opening Celebration and a keynote address by the former MP Jean Augustine will be held from 6 to 7:30 p.m.

The library will feature the documentary “John Ware Reclaimed” through all-day screenings on Feb. 6 and 20.

The Aurora Black Community Association will hold a One Voices, Diverse Voices online event Feb. 20 at 7 p.m.
