Newmarket takes bite out of parking tickets by waiving fee if you eat at town restaurant Jan. 21 to 31

The Town of Newmarket is driving home the idea of supporting local restaurants in a new time-limited program that lets motorists off the hook from paying their parking tickets.

Newmarket residents who receive a parking ticket from Jan. 21 to 31 can have their fee cancelled if they provide a receipt from a Newmarket restaurant in an amount equal to or greater than the parking fine.

The restaurant receipt must be dated as of the day the parking ticket was issued or up to five days afterward.

Receipts from before the ticket was issued will not be honoured.

The program is meant to encourage residents to get takeout from their favourite eateries in the last days before Ontario opens up restaurants to 50 per cent capacity on Jan. 31.

"Our restaurants have been hit especially hard throughout the pandemic," Mayor John Taylor said. "Myself, members of council and town staff are always looking for new ways to work with our community to support our businesses."

“This is one simple way we can broaden our Choose Local campaign to help drive more revenue to our local businesses to help support them during this challenging time.”

If you are Newmarket resident and receive a parking ticket from Jan. 21 to 31:

Email parkingtickets@newmarket.ca and provide your ticket number, proof of residency (e.g. driver's license, utility or tax bill) and a photo of your receipt from a Newmarket restaurant.

Tickets must be submitted by Feb. 7.

Your ticket will be cancelled and you will receive confirmation of this via email.

Visit www.newmarket.ca/parking for more information.

Tickets for improper use of accessible spaces or fire routes, or for obstructions (e.g. blocking a driveway, parking on sidewalk) will not be eligible in this incentive program.

Residents who want to support local restaurants, shops or services can visit the Choose Local directory to spend close to home.
