The town received a hefty boost from the province.

Recently, Georgina received $2.77 million from the Ontario Community Infrastructure Fund for 2022.

“We welcome this increased level of investment form the province to help with infrastructure improvements for our growing community,” Mayor Margaret Quirk said.

The town’s budget, which was approved in December 2021, identified a large capital need and the funding will help reduce the funding gap, she added.

The 2022 budget included $2.3 million for resurfacing, maintenance and rehabilitation of town roads as well as the initiation of a major road resurfacing program.

Of the $2.77 million in funding, $1.4 million will be funneled into the town’s roads program, for rehabilitation and resurfacing.

The provincial funding will be part of the town’s long-range financial plan, which is currently being updated.

Through the Ontario Community Infrastructure Fund, the province is allocating about $400 million in 2022 to more than 420 communities across Ontario.

This provincial investment is part of a $1 billion investment to help build and repair roads, bridges, water and wastewater infrastructure in small, rural and northern communities, bringing the province’s total investment to close to $2 billion over the next five years.
