The City of Toronto has issued an extreme cold weather alert on Friday as temperatures are expected to dip to -19 C without the wind chill on Friday evening.

The alert will remain in effect until further notice.

The alerts are issued when temperatures are forecasted to reach -15 C or colder, or when the wind chill is forecast to reach -20 C or colder.

Three warming centres are currently open with a fourth one opening its doors as a result of alert.

Those who need to seek out safe shelter can head to the following locations: 129 Peter St., 5800 Yonge St., Exhibition Place, Better Living Centre, 195 Princes’ Blvd and 1684 Queen Street East which replaces the now-closed shelter at Scarborough Civic Centre.

The centres typically open at 7 p.m. on the day an alert is issued and remain open until noon on the day an alert is cancelled.
