King Township is ready for the snow and ice.

The winter maintenance crew at the township is responsible for clearing more than 320 kilometres of roads, and includes two graders, 12 plows with sand and salt units, and three contracted sidewalk plows.

The crew will remove snow from roads when severe accumulation affects two-way traffic and the ability for on-street parking. The clearing of snow from the roadways is done on a priority basis and may take place over several days after snowfall.

The priority is given to commercial areas and areas where safety is a concern, according to the township.

Sometimes replowing of the priority streets is required to maintain traffic safety before the crews can move on to other local streets.

The township is reminding residents to avoid parking on the street and from obstructing the sidewalks to snowplowing and snow removal crews can operate effectively.

Cul-de-sacs require specialized snow removal equipment and procedures because of varied shapes, sizes and the presence of centre islands.

Most routes are completed within a 12-hour period, but clearance times might be longer when snowfall is exceptionally heavy, there are complications because of freezing rain, cars parked on the street or crews working during peak traffic times.
