Ontario’s latest pandemic restrictions have prompted Newmarket to close indoor recreation facilities and cancel winter programming until at least Jan. 26.

The following will be closed:

Magna Centre, including the fitness centre

NewRoads Centre for Performing Arts

Ray Twinney Recreation Complex. However, the vaccination clinic at the complex will remain open for vaccinations by appointment only. The Inn From the Cold drop by program will also remain open.

Recreation Youth Centre and Sk8 Park

Elman W. Campbell Museum

Newmarket Seniors' Meeting Place

The Community Centre and Lions Hall and Old Town Hall are currently closed and will remain closed to the public. On Jan. 6, York Region will open a new mass vaccination clinic at the Community Centre and Lions Hall

Winter programs that were scheduled to begin in January have been cancelled. All program participants will receive a full refund. Residents are asked for their patience at this time as staff work quickly to process refunds, which may take up to eight weeks to complete. The status of programs beginning Feb. 1 and onwards will be determined at a later date.

“This is not the way any of us were planning on starting 2022 but we will move forward as a community and stay strong together,” Mayor John Taylor said.

“As we near the two year mark of this pandemic, I know this has been extremely tough on everyone. Please continue to reach out and check on your family, friends and neighbours. Sometimes we don’t fully realize how meaningful a quick phone call or message can be to someone who is struggling. Now might be the time to reach out. As a town, we will continue to do our best to provide as many outdoor amenities as possible to provide safe outdoor activities for the community at a time when we all need to try to stay busy and active.”

All outdoor amenities will remain open, including skating at Riverwalk Commons, the Global Pet Foods Dog Park, the outdoor community skating rink at Lions Park, outdoor basketball, pickleball and tennis courts and all trails, playgrounds and parks.

Council and committee meetings will return to a fully virtual format and will continue to be streamed live online.
