Enough is enough for Vaughan.

On Dec. 28, the city announced it will temporarily cancel in-person recreational programming, as well as community centre services, due to a lack of staff.

A surge in COVID-19 cases, as the province struggles with the Omicron variant over the holidays, has resulted in the shortages, according to the city.

The closures, which go into effect on Dec. 30, will result in the indefinite closure of city-run fitness centres, some libraries and swimming pools.

Officials said the changes have been made to ensure safety of both staff and customers and noted that closures will only begin following the end of the day Dec. 29.

Some virtual programming will continue.

“As the global COVID-19 pandemic evolves and the Omicron variant spreads quickly across Ontario and Canada, the City of Vaughan remains focused on monitoring and responding to the situation to protect citizens, businesses and the greater community,” a statement from the city reads.

Some libraries will remain open with changes to safety protocol, including Bathurst Clark, Civic Centre and Pierre Berton.

For all libraries, curbside pickup will be available every day from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. except on Friday, Dec. 31 and Saturday, Jan. 1

“Decisions around in-person winter recreational programming have not been made at this time and will be dependent on Omicron data and staffing resources,” the statement further reads.
