The Town of Newmarket is receiving a $3.8 million in funding to repair and build local infrastructure through the Ontario Community Infrastructure Fund.

The funding from the Ontario government is part of a provincewide plan to get shovels in the ground on infrastructure projects that create jobs and support local economies, according to the province.

"Our government’s investment through Ontario Community Infrastructure Fund will support critical infrastructure projects in Newmarket and Aurora,” said Newmarket-Aurora MPP Christine Elliott in a news release. “By building Ontario, we are creating jobs, attracting economic growth and investment, and ensure our community continues to be the best place to live, work and raise a family.”

Mayor John Taylor said the $3,849,231 in funding will contribute to major projects, like the ones on Mulock Drive.

“As mayor of the Town of Newmarket, I am very excited with today’s announcement of a significant increase in infrastructure funding. Like most municipalities, Newmarket cannot meet all of its infrastructure needs without support from other levels of government,” he said. “This funding will help Newmarket advance critical projects like the Mulock Park and the Mulock multi-use path. We look forward to working with the Province of Ontario as we strive to meet the needs of our community both today and into the future.”

The Ontario Community Infrastructure Fund is a multi-year investment totalling nearly $2 billion. It will help build and repair roads, bridges, water and wastewater infrastructure in small, rural and northern communities.

The funding is allocated according to a formula that takes into consideration the economic situation and different needs of the 424 eligible communities across Ontario.

The formula means all communities are receiving at least $100,000 per year, which is an increase from previous years when it was $50,000.

For 2021, approximately $200 million total was allocated across the province.
