Aurora homeowners, be prepared to see the town portion of your property tax bill increase by 2.9 per cent next year.

The town did not respond to an email by our deadline asking what dollar figure that means for an average household.

The budget, approved Dec. 14, represents an increase of 1.9 per cent to account for inflationary pressures and a further one per cent to meet the needs of long-term fiscal strategies, according to a town statement.

“I am pleased that we have approved a budget that maintains the services that residents have come to rely on every day, while keeping in mind fiscal sustainability,” Mayor Tom Mrakas said in the statement. “Not only does our operating budget continue to provide quality of life for Aurorans, but we have a solid capital budget in place for 2022 that will support the renewal of our infrastructure for the future.”

The 2022 budget maintains existing service levels, but also incorporates continued funding for the $51.9-million Aurora Town Square, the town said.

The budget also allows for ongoing investments in the town’s assets, including roads, sidewalks, and facilities, which serve the community.

Key projects for 2022 include completing the Cultural Master Plan update and the Public Art Master Plan, implementing recommendations from the newly approved Diversity and Inclusion Plan, maintaining the community’s road, water, and storm sewer infrastructure, and moving forward with recommendations from the municipal service delivery review that was completed in 2021, the town said.
