With the holidays just around the corner and the additional fire hazards that this time of year can bring, Brampton Fire and Emergency Services (BFES) has released some tips for a “fire safe” season.
“After another challenging year, we are all looking forward to connecting with family and friends over the holidays. While this time is full of fun and festivities, it’s also important to be fire safe,” said Chief Bill Boyes.
According to BFES, cooking is the No. 1 cause of house fires in Brampton and Christmas trees, lights, and decorations present added areas of risk at this time of year.
“Water real Christmas trees daily and keep the base full of water,” read a news release from the city.
“Test and inspect all holiday lights and extension cords to ensure they aren’t overloaded and discard any that are frayed or damaged,” the release added.
BFES is also advising revellers to keep all decorations at least a metre away from sources of heat or open flames such as candles, fireplaces, or portable heaters.
“Be aware of any lit candles when you leave a room or go to bed or use battery operated ones instead,” the city said.
The department and city are also encouraging people to check and test their smoke and carbon monoxide alarms.
“‘Tis the season for family and celebration, and by following these important tips from the Brampton Fire and Emergency Services team, you can ensure it’s a safe one too,” added Mayor Patrick Brown in the release.
