Can't park on Newmarket streets overnight in winter but have nowhere for your car? The town has you covered

Drivers who need a place to park while winter overnight street parking rules are in effect can get a permit to park in select municipal parking lots.

Until April 15, residents are not allowed to park on roads from 2 to 6 a.m. to allow for snow removal.

But with a permit, cars can be parked from 5 p.m. to 7 a.m. at the town hall at 395 Mulock Dr., the Magna Centre at 800 Mulock Dr., the Ray Twinney Recreation Complex at 100 Eagle St. and downtown in the P3 parking lot on Doug Duncan Drive.

Cars must be relocated by 7 a.m. each morning to allow for snow removal.

“The pandemic has shifted how we live, work and play and one of the changes our town bylaw team noted was, with more people staying home, there weren’t enough parking spots on the property,” Mayor John Taylor said.

“As a town, we’ve adjusted our parking enforcement strategy to give more flexibility. The Off Street Parking Program pilot last year showed there is a need, which is why council has brought it back permanently and we hope more residents take advantage of the option.”

All residents will be eligible to apply for and obtain a temporary parking exemption permit through the town's online parking portal at https://parking.newmarket.ca/permits/?cmd=new by providing their vehicle information.

Permits will be issued electronically and without the need to print or place a hardcopy permit within vehicles.

Upon registering their vehicles online, residents will be provided with information about the rules of parking in town-owned parking lots on a first-come, first-served basis.

During the pilot program from Dec. 23 2020 to April 15, almost 100 permits were issued, which is fewer than one a day.

With the program now in place permanently, the town aims to increase usage and encourages residents to take advantage of the extra parking spaces when hosting friends and family this holiday season.
