Newmarket dog owners and their pups were allowed back at the town’s dog park over the weekend after it had been closed following reports dogs became ill at the facility.

Although tests of soil samples and mushrooms taken from the park at 220 Bayview Pkwy. proved inconclusive, the town deemed the site safe.

“After consulting with local veterinarians, neighbouring municipalities and industry experts, it was determined that the cause of some dogs becoming ill is most likely due to a virus,” the town said in a statement.

The park was shut down Nov. 3 and reopened Nov. 19 at 4 p.m.

“We would like to thank our residents for being patient as we work to ensure the dog park is safe for our pets. The safety of your pets is our number one priority.” Mayor John Taylor said.

“After a two-week investigation and speaking with industry experts, we are pleased to reopen the dog park to our community.”

In an effort to continue to keep all dogs safe, the town said it has:

Inspected the site and conducted an exploratory search of the area.

Loosened (fluffed up) the soil to increase air-flow.

Removed a minimal amount of organic matter (i.e. mushrooms) in the park.

Added an additional layer of mulch to the park.

Pet owners can help keep all dogs safe in the dog park by:

Avoiding the use of communal water bowls.

Ensuring their dog is up to date with their shots.

Not visiting the park if their dog is not feeling well.

Picking up after their pet.

Meanwhile, the town is currently experiencing a supplier shortage in dog waste bags normally provided in the dog park and along the trails.

The town will refill the dispensers when the waste bags become available.

Remember to keep pets on a leash at all times on public property, except at the dog park.
