Holy Cross Catholic Academy is going to “house the largest Sports Dome in the province,” it said Nov. 8 on Twitter.
“Final preparations are underway for the completion of the 100,000 square foot complex,” the school, which belongs to the York Region Catholic District School board, added.
“An impressive sight to behold! We can’t wait to enjoy using this state-of-the-art facility.”
Holy Cross offers various student programs such as the international baccalaureate diploma program, high performer athlete program, and specialist high school majors in the areas of arts and culture, health and wellness, and business.
YCDSB, meanwhile, said that it's planning to open the Sports Dome at Holy Cross later this month, pending any weather delays.
In York Region, neighbouring Markham welcomed its 70,000-square-foot sports dome in 2015 to offer programming for youth after-school soccer programs, as well as field rentals for adult leagues.
Markham's dome is also located on Father Michael McGivney high school property.
In August last year, York University announced that it was starting construction of a new multi-use seasonal sports dome and turf conversion, and it was expected to be Ontario's largest air-supported sports dome. The turf size is said to be equal to 112,500 square feet of playing surface and, if finalized, this could squash the Vaughan school's dream to have the largest sports dome in the province.
