Markham residents have even more ways to stay active and enjoy chilling in the great outdoors after the city announced it is expanding its outdoor skating rinks and winter pathways.
Following the successful Pathway Winter Maintenance Pilot Project in 2020, the City is expanding the program from eight to 95 city asphalt or concrete pathways, for a total of 29.5 km.
The pathways will be cleared within 24 to 48 hours following the end of a snow storm where snow accumulation exceeds five centimetres.
In addition to the Markham Civic Centre outdoor refrigerated ice rink, five new unrefrigerated ice rinks are also being constructed at Huntington Park, Victoria Square Park, Milliken Mills Park, Markham Museum and Milne Dam Park.
“The City of Markham is ready to tackle the elements with our robust winter operations, while also providing new and enhanced leisure offerings for the community to enjoy,” said Markham Mayor Frank Scarpitti.
Rinks will be made available pending weather conditions, and will include a flag system at each location signalling when the ice is safe to use. On-site parking will be available at all locations.
