The Town of Caledon says the province's Greater Golden Horseshoe Transportation Plan (GGHTP), which is supposed to guide Ontario’s transportation investment decision-making, has not been finalized and the municipality continues to advocate for a Caledon-Vaughan GO rail line in that plan.
The government of Ontario said it is working with municipalities to address transit issues and the plan, as "a living document" is continually being updated to address the needs of local residents and businesses in the Greater Golden Horseshoe region.
"The upcoming GGH transportation plan will reflect a commitment to work with Metrolinx and the Town of Caledon to monitor transit demand and advance the business case for passenger rail service, in addition to continuing to protect this corridor for potential future rail service opportunities," the government said in an email to The Enterprise.
Caledon is hopeful a Caledon-Vaughan GO rail line will be in the province's plans.
“Town of Caledon is continuing to grow and GO Transit, as well as other transit linkages, are critical to servicing and supporting that growth,” Mayor Allan Thompson said in a statement to the Enterprise. "The proposed GO rail line will provide public transit access to over one million people by 2051. We will continue to work with Metrolinx, the Ministry of Transportation and neighbouring municipalities to advocate for our community’s inclusion in the final plan.”
The town said Peel and York Regions and Brampton and Vaughan have expressed support for the GO rail line.
Town officials said they have made a “positive business case” for the transit service.
