The town received a funding boost from the province to help support winter events in Georgina.

Georgina received $61,780 for a series of Winter Classic events through the Reconnect Festival and Event program dedicated to help festival and event organizers adapt to new public health measures, pandemic safety protocols to develop virtual or drive-thru community events.

“The COVID-19 pandemic forced the cancellation of so many town events over the past year and a half,” Mayor Margaret Quirk said. “This funding will allow us to bring back some of our popular events along with some new ones.

“It’s important for the community to be able to come together in a fun and safe way, enjoy and participate in family friendly activities.”

Through the Reconnect Festival and Event funding program, the province invested $43 million to support more than 430 festivals and events for organizers to deliver innovative and safe experiences.

Georgina’s Winter Classic is a series of six events running from December 2021 to March 2022, celebrating community and family, while supporting local businesses.

The events include: a drive-thru magical festive holiday Parade of Lights with illuminated displays synced to music; Insta-worthy light installations in the town’s four downtown areas; self-guided, illuminated snowshoeing through one of the town’s trail system; exploring the community through a photo scavenger hunt; showcasing multiple restaurants in the winter food series, Taste of Georgina; and the popular SnoFest event will return with a new twist.
