The township of King is asking residents to recognize Waste Reduction Week by decreasing the amount of garbage they send to landfills.

Waste Reduction Week is held every October in Canada to remind Canadians to reduce the amount of garbage going to landfill and to raise awareness about the importance of sustainable consumption, the town said in a media release.

King is offering a series of engagement opportunities that coincide with Waste Reduction Week themes until Oct. 24.

Oct. 20 -- Recycle: Drive through electronic recycling at the municipal centre at 2585 King Rd. between 3 and 6 p.m.

Oct. 21 -- Reduce: King has partnered with Toronto Region Conservation Authority to offer a free online educational workshop between 1 and 2 p.m. for people to learn about microplastics. Pre-registration is required.

Oct. 22 -- Repurpose: A workshop will be hosted by Cathy’s Crawly Composters so people can learn about worms and vermicomposting at the Cold Creek Conservation Area between 5 and 6 p.m. Pre-registration is required.

"In recognition of Waste Reduction Week, we’re asking residents to do their part by being mindful of how they dispose of their waste," Mayor Steve Pellegrini said. "By using our Recycle Coach app and composting, it’s easier than ever to know exactly how you can reduce the amount of waste you’re sending to a landfill each week. Let’s all do our part to keep King beautiful for generations to come."

The Recycle Coach app is a free smartphone and computer app, which includes features such as a "What Goes Where?" search tool.
