Who says a home refresh can happen only in the spring?

Vaughan is helping residents get rid of clutter and make room for new items in the fall through their Curbside Giveaway Days on Oct. 23 and 24.

The curbside giveaway will allow items that would end up in landfills to be reused by others, which will help reduce waste sent to landfills.

Items such as books, toys, games, DVDs, furniture, small appliances and kitchen gadgets make for great items to placed at the curb during this event. For a full list of what items are recommended, visit the city's website: vaughan.ca/waste.

To participate, materials can be placed curbside and have to be marked “FREE” this coming weekend, beginning at 7 a.m.

Any items that are not claimed must be brought in by 5 p.m. on Oct. 24.

Items left at the curb after that time could result in a bylaw violation.

The city offers the following advice to successfully participate in the event:

-- Download and print a “FREE” curb alert poster for your items;

-- Only take items that are marked “FREE”;

-- Keep items you do not want to give away close to your home or inside to avoid confusion;

-- Keep sidewalks and fire hydrants clear;

-- Respect private property and do not walk on people’s lawns or gardens; and

-- Obey traffic laws at all times; do not block traffic or driveways.

COVID-19 safety regulations outlined by York Region Public Health, such as avoiding close contact, must be followed to ensure everyone can participate safely.

This event is part of the city's celebration of Waste Reduction Week, which started on Oct. 18 and runs until the 24.
