You might have noticed something new driving on Yonge Street in Holland Landing. York Region has installed a new pedestrian crossover on Yonge Street at the Holland Landing Community Centre.

The move comes after the town raised concerns with the region about children crossing the road from the newly built skate park.

York Region manager of traffic safety Nelson Costa said the pedestrian crossovers are a new type of traffic control being implemented on regional roads, with the one on Yonge Street being among the first in the region.

"It's the first of its kind in York Region," he said.

Costa said the crossovers have specific signs and pavement markings and some have a push button with flashing lights. Drivers must stop legally for pedestrians to cross the road.

Back in 2019, Ward 1 Coun. Terry Foster and Loralea Carruthers made sure the region investigated a crosswalk at the location. The closest stop light for children to cross at was at Bradford Street, a significant distance down the road.

“The consequences are huge,” Carruthers said at the time. “The skate park has increased the number of kids in the area. We are doing our due diligence to see if a crosswalk is warranted.”
