Calling for candidates: Richmond Hill mayoral byelection set for Jan. 24

Richmond Hill's mayoral byelection is slated for Monday, Jan. 24, 2022 with online voting option. The city will begin accepting nominations for mayor on Oct. 15.

Council voted to proceed with a byelection for the vacant mayor's position, following the retirement of former Mayor Dave Barrow.

Elected by eligible voters, the mayor will act as chief executive officer of the municipality, preside over council meetings, represent Richmond Hill at official functions and provide leadership as the head of council.

The current term of council will end Nov. 14, 2022. The next general municipal elections will be held on Monday, Oct. 24, 2022.

CANDIDATE ELIGIBILITY

To run for office as the mayor of Richmond Hill, a candidate must be:

Candidates must comply with all provisions of the Municipal Elections Act, 1996. This includes, but is not limited to, candidates shall not accept any contributions or incur any expenses pertaining to their election campaign until after their nomination is filed with and accepted by the city clerk.

FILING A NOMINATION

To file a nomination, eligible candidates must call 905-747-6541 or email candidates@richmondhill.ca to make an appointment with the Office of the City Clerk at Richmond Hill's Municipal Offices (225 East Beaver Creek Rd.).

Please note COVID-19 health and safety measures are in place. An online COVID-19 health screening form must be completed before visiting. You will be asked to show the results at the door. Do not visit if you are unwell. Face coverings/masks are required indoors.

Completed forms can be filled in and printed before the scheduled meeting, but should only be signed at the meeting.

At the time of filing, all candidates must submit a completed nomination form, at least 25 fully complete endorsements on the prescribed form, the declaration of qualification and pay the prescribed filing fee of $200.

Forms are available at RichmondHill.ca/RHVotes. Nominations will be accepted until 2 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 10, 2021.
