Enjoy the sweet sound of silence.
Provincial regulations overriding the city’s authority to enforce construction noise bylaws expired on Thursday, ending the free reign certain projects enjoyed during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Ontario Regulation 130/20 was enacted last April as part of the province’s pandemic response -- permitting construction noise from healthcare-related projects 24-hours per day.
Other projects were permitted to generate noise from 6 a.m. until 10 a.m.
Thursday’s expiry of that mandate means the city’s noise bylaw is once again in effect, forbidding construction noise between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. the next day -- 9 a.m. on Saturdays -- and all day Sunday and statutory holidays.
