Mayor Bonnie Crombie is doubling down on wanting to ban protests against COVID-19 measures at hospitals and schools, following a recent elementary school protest in Mississauga that she called “despicable.”
Twitter user Kalitali posted about a recent protest at Sts. Martha and Mary Catholic School, alleging that some of the protestors went as far as chasing down students and shoving pamphlets in their hands.
She said some of the protestors were parents who went on to pick their kids up at the bell.
“How is this tolerated!? I’m livid!” she said, calling on Crombie, premier Doug Ford, and education minister Stephen Lecce to step in and do something.
“This is despicable,” said Mayor Crombie, who said that while the city doesn’t have authority to outlaw these kinds of protests, Peel Regional Council has recently passed a motion calling on the province to make such protests illegal at hospitals and schools.
“We need them to take action on this,” said the mayor.
She and other politicians shared similar sentiments in September when a number of hospitals in Ontario were targeted by protestors against the COVID-19 vaccine mandate, with concerns that the protests would cause delays for ambulances and people trying to get treatment.
Whether the province will attempt to ban protests at hospitals and schools remains to be seen at this time.
