What's open and closed Labour Day in York Region?

Labour Day is coming up ... marking that transition from summer to fall, from idleness to work, from school holiday to school days.

This holiday dates back to an 1872 printers' strike in Toronto. The workers fought for a nine-hour workday. The strikers' victory marked a milestone in the changing relations between Canadian workers and their government.

Labour Day originally gave workers an opportunity to campaign for better working conditions or pay.

Labour Day in Canada is celebrated on the first Monday of September and it is considered a federal statutory holiday.

The holiday celebrates workers and the labour union movement. Labour Day parades and picnics are often organized by unions.

But for many of us, it will endure as the last long weekend of the summer, a time for one last cottage visit or camping trip.

Here’s what’s open and closed on Labour Day -- Monday, Sept. 6:

CLOSED

Canada Post (www.canadapost.ca) is closed on national, provincial and territorial holidays, (including Labour Day) with no collection or delivery of mail on those days. Post offices operated by the private sector will be open.

All LCBO stores will be closed on Monday, Sept. 6. Where permitted by local municipalities, some LCBO convenience outlets may observe their regular hours of business on Labour Day.

Recreation: When it comes to choosing a city- or town-run recreational activity, make sure you check with your municipality’s website before leaving the house.

OPEN

Most major malls, including Markham’s CF Markville Mall, Thornhill’s The Promenade and Newmarket’s Upper Canada Mall are open Labour Day from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Services: GO Transit operates on a Sunday schedule on Labour Day Monday, YRT services will operate on a Sunday/holiday schedule.

Grocery Stores: Fortinos stores in Vaughan are open on Labour Day from 7 a.m.-6 p.m.

At the No Frills locations, hours vary and customers are encouraged to check online at nofrills.ca for local store hours. Visit Loblaws.ca since store hours vary on Labour Day.

Clark and Hilda Avenue open 6 a.m.- 6 p.m. Labour Day

Aurora and Vaughan stores are closed

Sutton 9 a.m.- 6 p.m. and Bradford 7 a.m.-9 p.m.

The Beer Store: Vaughan and Newmarket locations are open 11 a.m.-6 p.m.
