Lighten up on the gas pedal, drivers! York Region roads will take longer to travel

Speed reductions at 17 locations are effective immediately

Better slow down on those York Region roadways, drivers.

Adjustments to speed limits at 17 locations across the region were announced Sept. 23 by York Regional Council.

The adjustments include decreases of 10 kilometres per hour and include school zone reductions, said a statement released by the Region of York.

During speed limit reviews and revisions, several factors are considered, including residential and business development, improving traffic operations, providing consistent speed limits and overall safety.

"Protecting all travellers on the road network, whether it is walking, cycling or driving, is vital to providing safe communities and inviting people to use active ways to travel," said Township of King Mayor Steve Pellegrini, chair of the region’s transportation services. "Speed limits are set and revised to enhance safety.

"By following speed limits, it allows motorists the time needed to stop, preventing serious injuries, especially to those most vulnerable."

To help notify travellers of the speed limit changes, "New" signs will be posted above speed limit signs at the beginning of each changed speed zone.

The changes are effective immediately.

Roads with changed speed limits in school zones, as well as other back to school new road safety initiatives, include:

• 2nd Concession Road from 150 m south of Doane Road to Mount Albert Road -- 70 to 60 km/h;

• Wellington Street West from Hilldale Road to 165 m west -- 60 to 50 km/h;

• Dufferin Street from 1,055 m south of 15th Sideroad to 540 m south of King Road -- 70 to 60 km/h;

• King Road from Warren Road to 170 m east -- 60 to 50 km/h;

• Lloydtown/Aurora Road from 1,488 m east of 7th Concession to 650 m east of Weston Road -- 80 to 60 km/h;

• Lloydtown/Aurora Road from 650 m east of Weston Road to Highway 400 northbound off-ramp -- 80 to 50 km/h;

• Bathurst Street from Mulock Drive to 685 m north -- 70 to 60 km/h;

• Major Mackenzie Drive West from 92 m west of Arnold Crescent to 115 metres west of Atkinson Street -- 50 to 60 km/h; and

• Warden Avenue from Bloomington Road to 210 m south -- 70 to 60 km/h.

Additional roads with speed limit changes include:

• Yonge Street from Morning Sideroad/Highway 11 to 200 m north of Green Lane -- 80 to 70 km/h;

• Hwy. 11 from Morning Sideroad/Yonge Street to Simcoe County Boundary -- 80 to 70 km/h;

• Mount Albert Road from 600 m west of Warden Avenue to Woodbine Avenue -- 80 to 70 km/h;

• Mount Albert Road from 600 m east of Warden Avenue to 600 metres west of Warden Avenue -- 80 to 60 km/h;

• York/Durham Line from 350 m south of Concession Road 9 to Highway 7 -- 80 to 70 km/h;

• Warden Avenue from Ravenshoe Road to east leg of Old Homestead Road -- 80 to 70 km/h;

• Warden Avenue from Bethel Sideroad to Baseline Road -- 80 to 70 km/h; and
• Davis Drive from 400 m east of McCowan Road to 900 m west of McCowan Road -- 80 to 70 km/h
