An interrupted road improvement project on Aurora’s Yonge Street is slated to resume before the end of this week, according to the Region of York.
Work on Yonge Street between Henderson Drive and Industrial Parkway South began in spring 2020 to improve the conditions of the roadway where excessive groundwater was collecting just below the surface.
However, the project was paused in November and again in March 2021 to seek a solution to a series of sinkholes that created large amounts of groundwater at the site.
Sinkholes have appeared under Yonge Street between 100 metres south of Henderson Drive and Industrial Parkway South at the Metrolinx GO Barrie Line underpass for more than a decade, said a statement released by the region.
"The contractor will be delivering construction equipment to the site today, with work planned to begin this week as soon as the weather permits," said the Region of York's senior project manager, Mark Nykoluk.
Weekend work may be required to accelerate completion.
During the current work period, drainage facilities are to be installed at a shallower depth than initially planned to address the issue of water collecting near the road surface. It is described as a short to medium term solution in an area where the road dips at the railway underpass.
During construction, traffic will be reduced to one lane in each direction along Yonge Street between Henderson Drive to Industrial Parkway South.
Temporary traffic signals will be located at the intersection of Yonge Street and Industrial Parkway South.
Left turns from southbound Yonge Street onto Industrial Parkway will not be permitted.
