Ontario’s vaccine passport system starts Wednesday. Here’s what you need to know

Ontario’s vaccine passport system comes into effect Wednesday. That means entry to certain non-essential businesses will be limited to those who are fully vaccinated with a Health Canada approved vaccine and two weeks out from their second dose.

The measures, which were announced by Ontario Premier Doug Ford earlier this month, will prevent unvaccinated people from high-risk settings where the chance of transmitting COVID-19 is higher. People caught flouting the rules are subject to a $750 fine.

In October, the province will shift to a QR code that automatically shares your vaccination status -- but in the meantime, showing a vaccine receipt will be required to gain entry into certain businesses and venues.

Here’s everything else you need to know.

Where can I get my vaccine certificate?

If you’re hoping to take part in certain activities, you will need to carry a printed or PDF copy of your vaccine receipt. If you’ve lost your copy, no fear: the certificate is available to download here.

Red and white health card holders should call 1-833-943-3900 for their receipt, which will be sent by email.

Where is the certificate required?

Ontarians will need to provide proof of vaccination to enter non-essential businesses, including gyms, indoor restaurants, bars and nightclubs. Meanwhile, large-scale events such as sporting events and concerts, and venues such as convention centres, banquet halls, casinos or racing tracks will also require you to show evidence of having both doses.

Patrons will be asked for their vaccine certificate and a piece of photo identification for entry.

Last week, the Ontario government released regulations on how the passport would be enforced, and clarified that patrons won’t need to show evidence of their vaccination status if they’re going inside a restaurant while en route to an outdoor seating area, or while placing or picking up a takeout order.

Where can I go without one?

Retail shopping, as well as any essential activities, such as buying groceries or seeking medical attention, will not require a vaccine certificate to enter. The same goes for barber shops, nail or hair salons, and outdoor dining.

Children under 12 and those who can provide written evidence for a documented medical reason they cannot be vaccinated are exempt from the mandate.
