As vaccine companies scramble to approve jabs for those under the age of 12, elementary schools registered more COVID-19 cases in comparison to their secondary counterparts in York Region.
York Region Public Health data, last updated at 5 p.m. Sept. 15, showed there are at least 18 students with COVID-19 in 19 schools.
At least 12 of these cases are in elementary schools.
However, Pickering College, a private school that has both elementary and secondary in Newmarket, has one student and two staff. It is unclear if the student is an elementary or secondary pupil.
However, in daycares, public health reported there are 14 cases in three places.
Daycares could spike in one location in case of outbreaks. York Region Media reported in late August when Beynon Fields Before and After School in Richmond Hill had 15 cases of children and one staff member who tested positive for COVID-19.
Domenic Scuglia, York Catholic District School Board director of education, told York Region Media, there is some ongoing talk of a vaccination approval for those under 12 in the upcoming months.
