Vaughan has scheduled an online meeting Wednesday, Oct. 13 to allow its citizens input as the city undergoes reviews to update its 2010 official plan, it said in a statement Sept. 13.

Vaughan must update its official plan after Ontario handed out its 2051 growth targets for municipalities provincewide. Municipalities are now obligated to plan growth 30 years out, rather than 20.

Ontario anticipates York Region to attract the most growth in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area by 2051. Within the region, Vaughan, known for its manufacturing jobs and proximity to the airport, is expected to see the most intensification.

Population boom is one of the key reasons behind the official plan amendment.

Vaughan is “one of the fastest growing cities in Canada” and “projected to be home to an additional 227,100 people and nearly 111,800 more jobs” in the upcoming 30 years, the city said. It is currently home to 341,600 people and 240,200 jobs.

“This accounts for almost one third of York Region’s expected growth to 2051,” it added.

When York Region presented the provincial targets to Vaughan council in May, Coun. Marilyn Iafrate described it as “aggressive” since it will also open up the whitebelt area. Council at the time said involving the public should be a top priority.
