Here is what Vaughan-Woodbridge candidates have to say about combating climate change

Since April, there have been about 1,000 fires affecting approximately 680,700 hectares of land in Ontario.

We’ve asked Vaughan-Woodbridge’s federal election candidates this question:

“We've seen increasing wildfire and flooding activity and extended heatwaves in Canada in recent years as the effects of climate change become more and more apparent. What are your party's primary strategies to combat climate change?”

Here are the answers:

CONSERVATIVE ANGELA PANACCI

Wildfires, flooding, and climate change are serious issues. We will invest in remote sensing and other technology that will improve the early detection of wildfires and better predict fire behaviour. Canada’s Conservatives have a serious plan to combat climate change that allows us to meet our targets and reduce emissions by 2030, all while repealing Justin Trudeau’s Carbon Tax. Independent analysis, conducted by Navius Research, found that our Canada Recovery Plan will effectively achieve the same emissions reductions as the government’s current plan by 2030, while resulting in a boost to jobs and the economy.

We will fight climate change and protect the environment, but we won’t do it on the backs of hardworking Canadians or by hurting our economy.

Canada’s Conservatives are the only party with a plan to secure our environment, secure jobs, and secure our future.

LIBERAL FRANCESCO SORBARA

There is no denying that we are in a climate crisis. And from heat wave to wildfires, Canadians are seeing the impacts of that crisis every day. Canadians need us to act now to keep them safe and healthy from these extreme weather events. We can’t wait.

That’s why a re-elected Liberal government is committing to train 1,000 new community-based firefighters and help provide them the equipment they need to keep themselves and others safe.

We will help Canadians make their homes more resilient from the impacts of climate change. And we’ll partner with the private sector to innovate climate adaptation, including by lowering insurance premiums that would save Canadians money.

Canada can’t go backward to the Conservative days, when nothing was done to fight climate change and protect our environment.

NDP’S PETER DEVITA

Aug. 7, UN released its “code-red” report. Humanity’s end may be closer than we fear. Canadians produce 22,000 tons of GHGs (greenhouse gases) per person per year, fifth highest in world, highest of G20. We must stop burning fossil fuels (oil, gas and coal). Stop subsidizing billions of dollars per year looking for more oil. Stop the pipeline to disappearing markets. The Far East is going electric. Bloomberg declared “The Oil Age Is Coming to a Close.” This government purchased a $7.5-billion loser. Stop burning this valuable resource. Instead, make over 6,000 products -- from nylons to carbon composites. Imagine burning all wood instead of making furniture. We are doing this with oil. Build factories not pipelines that export Canadian jobs. This government does not know what it is doing. The age of oil has ended.

GREEN PARTY’S MUHAMMAD HASSAN KHAN

The Green party’s Green Recovery plan calls for a 60 per cent reduction in emissions from 2005 levels by 2030 with clear enforceable targets and timelines, starting in 2025. Priority actions include:
