Aurora’s Barclay Goodrow is bringing a good pal to meet some hometown friends.

The Tampa Bay Lightning forward is scheduled to hoist the Stanley Cup to Aurora’s Machell Park Aug. 26 as part of his day with the National Hockey League’s most coveted trophy.

The 28-year-old Goodrow, who grew up in Aurora and played for the York Simcoe Express and Aurora Minor Hockey Association teams, is the centrepiece for an afternoon reception filled with hockey-related activities.

In recent seasons, members of the NHL playoff championship teams have been allotted one day of personal time with the Stanley Cup.

COVID-19 health precautions prevented Goodrow and other Lightning players from the tradition of spending a day with the Stanley Cup following their win in the summer of 2020.

The limited-capacity event includes photos with the Stanley Cup, a photo booth and presentation by the Aurora Sports Hall of Fame.

Gates open at 11:30 a.m., with parking available at the Aurora Community Centre. Goodrow is expected to be on hand with the Stanley Cup from 1 to 3 p.m.

The Lightning’s victory marked the third season in a row that an Aurora resident has been on the championship team roster.

Robert Thomas was a member of the 2019 champions, the St. Louis Blues.

The undrafted Goodrow broke into the NHL in 2014 with the San Jose Sharks. He was traded to Tampa Bay prior to the 2020 trade deadline.

A free agent, Goodrow recently signed a six-year contract worth a reported $21.85 million with the New York Rangers.
