Construction is set to begin this week, July 26, on Yonge Street in Newmarket for culvert repairs.

The culvert, which allows water to flow beneath the road, will be relined to extend its life and a new pipe will be installed, according to York Region.

It is located on Yonge, just north of Eagle Street near the McDonald’s and York Region Administrative Centre.

During construction, access to businesses in the area will be maintained and the road will remain open to traffic but some closures are expected.

The region warns that on the west side of Yonge, temporary closures of the bike lane will be required to complete the work.

“Safety is our number one priority; please slow down through construction areas,” they said.

The work is expected to be completed in spring of 2022, however, York Region said delays due to weather or COVID-19 public health measures may occur.

“York Region will provide advance notice whenever possible,” the construction notice said. “York Region will make every effort to minimize disruptions and we thank you for your patience and understanding.”

This is one of six construction projects York Region has ongoing in Newmarket, including road resurfacing work on Bayview Avenue and intersection improvements at Leslie Street and Leslie Valley Drive, which both began in June and are expected to be completed this fall.
