Residents can help Richmond Hill children start off another school year amid the pandemic with the tools they need in the classroom.

Every August for the past 10 years, the Salvation Army has been helping the families who cannot afford to buy the required school supplies for their kids to start the new school year.

"This year is no exception as we anticipate schools opening up for their students after the long lockdown," said Mary Halbert, the Salvation Army's community and family services coordinator.

The needed items include backpacks, lunch boxes, crayons, colouring pencils, pens, paper, notebooks, erasers, highlighters, calculators, math sets, graph paper.

"The items should be new so that the children can go to school with dignity and excitement, not worrying about having the things they need. Gently used items are also gratefully received," said Halbert.

During July and August, the public is welcome to drop off donations at a new office located at 588 Edward Ave, unit 29, Richmond Hill Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.

The school supplies will be distributed from Aug. 23 to Sept. 3.

Last year the program helped 250 students during a difficult year.

"The people of Richmond Hill stood behind us as we supported our community and we are very grateful for your generosity," said Halbert. "Together we can bring hope and joy to our next generation of citizens and leaders."
