The Town of Newmarket is bringing back its summer camp programs in 2021 with registration opening June 15.

The municipality cancelled its programming last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic and provincial restrictions. But this year the province has said overnight and day camps will both be allowed under step one of the reopening strategy, due to start June 14.

“We understand how important it is for kids to remain active and engaged and we have been eagerly awaiting to launch our summer camps when it was safe to do so,” Mayor John Taylor said.

However, Newmarket will reduce the number of camps from a typical year “to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience." It will offer full daytime general, sports, arts, and specialty camps for children aged four to 12. Camp weeks will run from July 5 to Sept. 3.

Participant numbers will be limited, and programming will be in a small group format. Non-residents will not be able to sign up until June 22 and only if there is space remaining.

Campers will be required to complete a COVID-19 screening each day before arrival.  All campers and staff will be required to wear face coverings at all times. A physical distancing of two metres will be emphasized and enforced according to the municipality, except for behaviour management and first aid when necessary.

The municipality will also offer a Kids on the Move Park Program for ages six to 12, offering two hours of activities for $9 per day.

“It’s been a long, difficult winter, and we are excited to provide more opportunities for much-needed recreational activities to participate in during the summer months,” Taylor said. “Whether you are looking for full-day camps or short two-hour programs, all participants will be able to engage and socialize in a fun, friendly and safe atmosphere.”
