Toronto can fine up to $5,000 if you set off fireworks in the wrong place this Canada Day

Canada Day is right around the corner, and if you plan to light off fireworks, you might want to brush up on your Toronto city bylaws.

If you have private property, you're in luck, you don't need a permit for Canada Day. But you might want to rethink your plans if you're looking to utilize public spaces.

If you're caught with fireworks at a Toronto beach or park, you could receive a $300 set fine for setting them off or having them in your possession. However, the City could also issue a Part III summons with a fine as high as $5,000.

You can also be fined up to $350 if you're caught, "discharging fireworks on or into a highway, street, lane or square," the City told Narcity.

Canada Day and Victoria Day are the only days of the year when you can legally set off family fireworks, which are defined as "low hazard," on your own private property without a permit from the Toronto Fire Services.

On any other day of the year, setting off fireworks without a permit can get you a whopping $500 fine, according to the City of Toronto's firework bylaws.
